Ferocactus (Cactaceae) Ferocactus has 25–30 species of cactuses, found in Mexico and southwestern USA. Many are very spiny, with the central spine curved or hooked. Ferocactus cylindraceus Barrel Cactus This globular, later cylindrical cactus has red, white, pink, or yellowish spines, to 17cm (6½in) long, and yellow flowers, 3–6cm (1¼–2½in) long, in spring. It is wild in the Mojave desert in Mexico, southern California, and east to Utah and Arizona. The stem has a 40cm (16in) diameter. Cultivation Needs sandy rocky soil. Water infrequently, mostly in spring. Height to 2m (6½ft); spread to 1m (3ft). USZ 10–11, surviving -1°C (30°F) of overnight frost. Tolerant of summer drought. |
