Fouquieria splendens Engelm. Coach Whip, Ocotillo, Jacob’s Staff or Vine Cactus. This shrub from southwestern North America has arching branches densely set with spines and clusters of fleshy, elliptic to inversely lance-shaped leaves, to 2.5cm (1in) long. The red tubular flowers, to 2.5cm (1in) long, have recurved lobes. They are borne in spring and summer. Cultivation Needs dry sandy soil. Give some rain in winter, very little in summer. Height to 7m (23ft); spread to 6m (20ft). USZ 10–11, surviving -1°C (30°F) of overnight frost. Tolerant of summer drought. |
