Fagus orientalis Lipsky Oriental Beech Native to Asia Minor, the Caucasus and Balkans, growing in lower more sheltered places than the Common Beech, (F. sylvatica). Height to 30m (100ft) in the wild. Flowers open in May, drooping male clusters on stalks 2.5-5cm (1-2in) long, the female produced at the tip of the shoot. Fruit have husks about 2.5cm (1in) long on stems 5-7.5cm (2-3in) long and which split and fall in October to release the triangular nuts. Leaves are longer than Common Beech, with 7-12 pairs of veins. Bark is smooth, dark grey and furrowed. |
