Ilex opaca Ait. American Holly
Evergreen tree, native to central and eastern United States, where many cultivated varieties and hybrids have been produced. Wood has similar uses to the European Common Holly and berry-bearing branches are also used in
N. America for Christmas decoration. Height to 12-15m (40-50ft) in the wild. Flowers open in June, males and females on separate trees. Berries are about 0.6cm (¼in) across, ripen in November and persist on the tree through winter. Leaves dull with sharp spines, though leaves in upper parts of old trees may have entire margins. Z5.
