Ilex latifolia Thunb. Tarajo.(Aquifoliaceae) An evergreen tree with spineless or few-spined leaves, native of S Japan and SE China, growing in forests, and commonly planted near temples, flowering in May. Tree to 20m, usually less in gardens. Leaves 12-20 x 4-8cm, oblong, with very short spiny teeth. Flowers yellow-green in masses in the leaf axils. Berries red, c. 8mm across. Min. -5°C. This is one of the parents of the hardier, large-leaved Ilex x keohniana ‘Chestnut Leaf’. Z7. |
