Gardenia augusta ‘Veitchii’ The traditional double cultivar with thick-petalled flowers, 4cm across, with a particularly rich heavy scent. It makes a low dense shrub to 2m in diameter, producing flowers mainly in May–November. Under glass it needs frequent spraying and humidity to keep red spider mite at bay, with feeding in warm weather, kept drier in winter. Shade from hot sun. Needs acid soil and much the same climatic conditions as oranges. USZ 10–11, surviving -1°C (30°F) of overnight frost. Requires summer water.
