Gardenia augusta (L.) Merrill, syn. G. florida L. G. jasminoides Ellis (Rubiaceae) An evergreen shrub or small tree with dark green shiny leaves and wonderfully scented white flowers, native of SE China from Hong Kong, where it is common to W Hubei, and of S Japan, growing in scrub on low hills up to 330m, flowering in April–June. Tree to 12m; leaves 5–15cm, ovate to lanceolate or oblong. Flowers around 6cm across, fading to yellow after one day. Fruit ripening orange, topped by the persistent narrow calyx lobes. |
