Gardenia (Rubiaceae) The genus Gardenia contains about 250 species of evergreen shrubs and trees, wild in Africa and Asia. Double gardenias were an indispensable buttonhole for Victorian or Edwardian evening dress, as few flowers have such a heady tropical scent. They are native of China, and were long cultivated there before being brought to Europe.
