Hardenbergia violacea Purple Coral Pea, False Sarsparilla This tough, wiry, evergreen twining climber or shrub carries spikes of pea-like flowers in early spring. The flowers are about 1cm (3/8in) across and usually rich purplish blue but pink and white forms are cultivated. The simple, lance-shaped leaves are 3–12cm (1 1/4 –4 3/4in) long. Hardenbergia violacea is native from Queensland to Tasmania, and plants from different areas have differing requirements. Cultivation Grow in dry but preferably heavy soil. Prune hard after flowering. Height to 3m (10ft). USZ 9–11, surviving -6.5°C (20°F) of overnight frost. Tolerant of summer drought. |
