Hamamelis virginiana L. (Hamamelidaceae) Virginian Witch Hazel Native from Nova Scotia eastward to Wisconsin, south to Texas (rarely) and N. Florida, in deciduous woods, flowering in September-October either with the leaves or after the leaves have fallen. Deciduous shrub to 9 m, usually in the understory of tall forest. Petals uncurling in warmth, curling up again when cold. Acid soil. Hardy to -35°C.
