Hamamelis japonica var. arborea (Mast.) Gumbleton (syn. H. arborea Ottol. ex Mast.)
Described from cultivated plants, introduced from Japan by Siebold in 1832, and not recognized by Japanese floras. As commonly cultivated it has deep red calyces and very crinkled petals on a tall-growing, twiggy shrub.
