Hamamelis japonica Sieb. & Zucc. (Hamamelidaceae) Japanese Witch Hazel Native of Japan, in S. Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, where it flowers in March-April. A deciduous large shrub or small tree, variable in leaf shape, hairiness and flower colour. Var. bitchuensis (Makino) Ohwi from the Chugoku district has persistently stellate-pubescent leaves, while var. obtusa has very blunt leaves, with deciduous hairs, and is found in eastern and northern Honshu. Easily cultivated, preferring rather moist, acid soil, in semi-shade. Hardy to -20°C. Late winter. |
