Hydrangea quercifolia Bartram Oakleaf Hydrangea Native of Alabama, Florida and Georgia, on the banks of streams and on bluffs, flowering in June. A low deciduous shrub that grows up to 5ft (1.5m) tall and generally much wider. In late summer and autumn it produces large conical clusters of white florets which often turn purplish-pink as they age. The leaves are broadly oval, up to 6in (15cm) long and, unusually for a hydrangea, are strongly lobed, turning to red and purple in the autumn. Hardy to -10°F (-23°C), US zones 6–9. |
