Juglans regia L. English Walnut, Persian Walnut or Madeira Walnut Native distribution is uncertain, since it has long been cultivated throughout Europe, including Britain, and parts of Asia. The timber is highly prized for veneers and furniture and the fruit is harvested for pickling or for eating raw. Height to 30m (100ft). Flowers open in June, male catkins about 5-10cm (2-4in) long; fruit is smooth and about 3.7-5cm across. Leaves usually have 5-7 leaflets, sometimes more. Young shoots have no down. Bark is smooth and grey with wide, deep cracks. Z5.
