Kalmia latifolia L. (Ericaceae)Mountain laurel, Calico Bush
Native of New England, Quebec, New York State and Ohio south to Louisiana and W. Florida, in deciduous forest often among rocks on acid soil, flowering from May to July in the north. Evergreen shrub to 3 m, rarely to 10 m. Leaves oblanceolate, to 10 cm long. Flowers to 2.5 cm across, usually pale pink but sometimes crimson, purplish-brown or white. Acid soil; part shade or full sun in cooler climates. Hardy to -30°C. Summer. Many cultivars from North America are now likely to become commoner, as they are propagated by tissue culture. Z4.

Protected as the state flower of Connecticut, profuse flowering displays of K. latifolia can be seen along the Shenipsit Trail in east-central Connecticut in early June.
