Metrosideros kermadecensis Kermadec Pohutukawa
This is a rather similar tree to M.excelsa, but is less hardy and has broader leaves, 3–5cm (11⁄4–2in) long, brighter crimson flowers in midsummer, and flower stalks and sepals covered in white indumentum. It is found wild on the Kermadec islands. ‘Variegatus’ has creamy margins.
Cultivation Grow in moist sandy soil.
Height to 9m (30ft); spread to 6m (20ft). USZ 10–11, surviving -1°C (30°F) of overnight frost. Needs water in summer.
