Malvaviscus arboreus Cav. (Malvaceae) Wax Mallow A very variable much-branched shrub with red flowers that never open, native of Florida, Texas and Mexico south to Peru and Brazil, flowering in summer. Stems to 4m. Leaves unlobed or shallowly 3-lobed, coarsely toothed, downy. Flower stalks to 7cm. Flowers 2.5-5cm long; petals red, remaining twisted, with the style and stamens protruding. For any good soil and a sunny position, kept rather dry in winter and well-watered in summer. Min. 0°C. Z9.
