x Mahoberberis Schneider (1906), in the family Berberidaceae, is a hybrid genus covering cultivated crosses between Mahonia and Berberis. Z6. The one illustrated is Mahoberberis aquisargentii Description Shrubs to 2m, the shoots not spiny. The leaves are evergreen, pinnate or entire, and toothed. The flowers are yellow, irregularly clustered. Fruits are not formed. Key Recognition Features Entire and pinnate leaves carried on the same plant. Evolution and Relationships These are garden hybrids. x Mahoberberis neubertii (Baumann) Schneider is between Mahonia aquifolium and Berberis vulgaris, and x Mahoberberis aquisargentii Krüssman is between Mahonia aquifolium and Berberis sargentii. A further hybrid, x M. miethkeana Melander & Eade, is between Mahonia aquifolium and another unknown evergreen Berberis. Ecology and Geography The oldest of the hybrids, x M. neubertii, was raised in by M. Baumann at Botwiller in Alsace in 1854. x Mahoberberis aquisargentii was raised by H. Jensen in Sweden in 1943, and x M. miethkeana was found in a Californian nursery at around the same time. Comment These hybrids are sometimes grown as curiosities.
