Pyrus amygdaliformis Vill. Almond-leaved Pear Native to southern Europe, particularly around the Mediterranean, sometimes grown in other parts of Europe for ornament. Height to about 12m (40ft) but may be shrubby. Flowers open in April about 2.5cm (1in) across in clusters of 8-12, sometimes massed together. Fruits are spherical rather than pear-shaped, slightly wider than long, about 2.5cm (1in) across. They ripen yellowish brown in October. Leaves are variable, usually narrow, about 3.7-6cm (1˝-2˝in) long, 1.2-1.8cm (˝-žin) wide with pale hairs at first but becoming hairless and shiny on upper surface and almost hairless beneath. |
