Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch Tamarack, Hackmatack or American Larch Native to Alaska and Canada south to Pennsylvania, where its timber has been used for telegraph poles and railway sleepers. Cultivated in north-east N. America and occasionally in Europe as an ornamental tree. Height to 18-25m (60-80ft). Flowers open in March smaller than other larches; females dark red usually less than 1cm (2/5in), males yellow. Cones are also small, about 1.5cm (3/5in) long with smooth scales. Foliage turns golden in September and October. Bark is reddish brown and scaly. Z2.
