Larix kaempferi (Lamb.)Carr. Japanese Larch Native to Japan, widely used as a forestry tree in western Britain. Height to 25-30m(80-100ft). Flowers open in March; males yellow when shedding pollen, females about 1cm (2/5in) red and greenish cream each scale showing both colours. Cones are distinctive, usually rather round, about 2.5cm (1in) across. The back-turned bracts give the appearance of a small rose. Foliage has leaves with dark green upper surface and 2 bands of grey on underside. Bark is dark reddish brown, cracked or broken into scales. Z4.
