Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Kuzeneva Dahurian Larch Native to Siberia, cultivated in botanical collections. Height to 30m (100ft) in the wild. Flowers open in early March; males greenish yellow becoming yellow when pollen is shed; females red and green, about 0.5-lcm (1 1/5-2/5in), ripening through the summer to a purple cone, which finally turns brown in October or November, opening to release seed. Cones are about 2.5cm (1in) long with glossy rounded scales turned slightly outwards. Foliage has needles flat on upper surface and slightly keeled underneath. Bark is dark reddish brown, broken into long scales. Very hardy Z1.
