Larix decidua Mill. Common Larch or European Larch Native to mountains of central and southern Europe, cultivated in plantations and shelterbelts or as an ornamental in Europe and N. America. Height to 30-42m (100-140ft). Male and female flowers open in late March, early April; males turning yellow when pollen is shed; females about 1cm (2/5in) long curve round to sit pointing vertical and may be pale or nearly white. Cones, ripen from green to brown in autumn: they may be long, about 4.5cm (1¾in) or short and oval, 1.5-3cm (3/5-1 1/5in) long, each scale slightly wavy. Foliage turns golden yellow in November before falling. Bark is grey or pinkish grey with vertical cracks and scaly ridges.
