Pseudotsuga macrocarpa (Torr.) Mayr, synonym P. douglasii var. macrocarpa (Torr.) Engelm. Large-coned Douglas Fir Native to California, occasionally planted in gardens and collections. Height to 9-28m (30-90ft). Flowers appear in April, males yellowish, about 1.2cm (½in) long, females reddish green about 5cm (2in) long. Cones are 9-12.5cm (3½-5in) long and may be even larger. They have short protruding bracts. Leaves are set around the shoot, and slightly curved glossy green above with 2 pale bands beneath. Bark is blue-grey with wide orangey brown cracks. Zone 8
