Liquidambar slyraciflua L. Sweet Gum, American Sweet Gum, Red Gum Deciduous tree, native to eastern United States and Central America. The timber is sometimes known as 'satin walnut'. Height to 45m (150ft) in the wild. Flowers open in May: males in round heads on a spike 5-7.5cm (2-3in) long; females solitary or in pairs about 1.2cm (½in) across. Fruits are about 2.5-3.7cm (1-1½in) across. Leaves are 5, sometimes 7 lobed, with fine toothed edges. The vein axils on the underside bear rust coloured tufts. Autumn colours are purple, deep red and orange. Z5.
