Malus coronaria (L.) Mill. Sweet Crab Apple or Garland Tree Small tree, native to eastern N. America, often grown in gardens as it makes a charming ornamental. Height to 6-9m (20-30ft). Flowers open in May and June, with a beautiful sweet fragrance, each about 2.5-5cm (1-2in) across in clusters of 4-6. Fruits are about 2.5-3.7cm (1-1½in) across ripening in October, but not palatable, being rather acid. Leaves may be almost 3-lobed and turn yellow in the autumn. Z4.
