Magnolia tripetala L. Umbrella Tree, Elkwood, Umbrella Magnolia Deciduous tree, native to eastern N. America. Cultivated as an ornamental in northern states and in Europe. Height to 9-l2m (30-40ft). Flowers have a strong scent and open in May and June, outer petals about 10-12.5cm (4-5in) long. Fruit is about 10cm (4in) long. Seeds are scarlet. Leaves are large and distinguished by their tapering bases. They grow in umbrella-like clusters, giving the tree its common name. Z5.
