Magnolia hypoleuea Sieb. & Zucc., synonym Magnolia obovata Thunb. Japanese Big-leaved Magnolia Deciduous tree, native to Japan. Height to 1.5-25m (50-80ft) or more. Strong-smelling flowers open in June, 20cm (8in) across. Fruit is red, 12.5-20cm (5-8in) long. Leaves are rather wider than most magnolias and tend to be clustered at tips of shoots. Z6.
