Magnolia campbellii subsp. mollicomata (W.W. Smith) Johnstone from China and Burma, differs in its silky hairy flower stalk, which is smooth in subsp. campbellii from Nepal and NE India. Both require deep, rich moist acid soil and are intolerant of dry winds. The flowers are often ruined by spring frosts but the buds are hardy when tightly closed. Trees grow well and fast in subtropical climates with wet summers. Min. -10°C.
