Ward Native of Yunnan, on either side of the Salween R. and of neighbouring Burma, in temperate rain forest, flowering in March and April. Deciduous large shrub or tree to 20 m. Leaves broadly elliptic, acute or acuminate, rounded or broadly cuneate at the base, 10-25 cm long. Flowers pink to purplish, crimson or white, on a downy peduncle. Acid or neutral, humus-rich soil; sun or part shade. Hardy to -10°C, but the flower buds often killed by late frosts. Subsp. campbellii from C. Nepal to Bhutan, differs in its usually glabrous peduncle. Z9. |
