Nothofagus procera (Poepp. & Endl.) Oerst. syn. Nothofagus alpina Rauli Beech Deciduous tree, native to the Andes in Chile, and in Argentina near the Chilean border, where it is one of the most important timber trees. Its use in forestry is being extended to Britain where it apparently has great potential. Its wood is superior to the Roblé Beech (N. obliqua) and it has a fast growth rate. Height to 25m (80ft) and more. Flowers open in May; males about 0.6cm (¼in) long, females tiny green and nut-shaped in leafaxils towards the ends of shoots. Fruits are about 1cm (2/5in) long, breaking open in September to release seeds. Leaves have more pairs of veins than N. obliqua, usually 14-18 pairs. Bark is smooth, greyish-brown with vertical wide dark cracks. Z7. |
