Paliurus spina-christi Miller (Rhamnaceae) Christ's Thorn Native of the Mediterranean region from Spain and France eastwards to C. Asia, and N. China, on dry hills and in hedges up to 3000 m, flowering in April-July, and conspicuous fruit from August to October. A deciduous shrub to 3 m, with crooked twigs. Leaves 2-4 cm long ovate, with spiny stipules. Flowers with S petals; fruits 1.8-3 cm in diameter, with a wavy wing. Dry soil, and tolerant of drought in summer, full sun. Hardy to -15°C. Fruits flat, disc-like, 2-3 cm across. |
