Paeonia potaninii 'Alba' Komar. F. C. Stern (Paeoniaceae)
Native of N.W. Yunnan and W. Sichuan, on rocky hillsides at 3000-3600 m, flowering in June. The original form, called P. delavayi var. angustiloba Rehder & Wilson, has deep purplish-crimson flowers like P. delavayi. The white form, shown here, is more commonly cultivated. There does not appear, however, to be a white form of ordinary P. delavayi. The yellow form of P. potaninii, from Yunnan, is called var. trollioides (Stapf) F. C. Stern. Low suckering shrub to 1 m, forming spreading patches. Leaves to 25 cm long, 30 cm across, with narrower segments than P. delavayi. Flowers c.5 cm across. Any well-drained soil; full sun. Hardy to -20°C. Early summer.
