Ochna serrulata (Hochst.) Walp. (Ochnaceae) Mickey-Mouse Plant A small twiggy shrub with yellow flowers and strange fruits with black seeds on persistent red sepals, native of much of South Africa, growing on the edges of forest, flowering from April-October, with the fruit persistent through the winter. Shrub or small tree to 3m. Leaves narrowly elliptic, toothed, shining pale green. Flowers with yellow obovate petals, about 2cm across. Fruits of 5 green, then black, fleshy 1-seeded drupes, 1 cm across, on the base of the swollen red persistent sepals. Easily grown in a cold greenhouse or in a warm garden outside. Prune in spring.
