Pinus thunbergii Parl. Japanese Black Pine or Kuro-matsu
Native to Japan, cultivated in gardens and botanical collections. Height to about 30m (100ft) or more in the wild. Flowers open in early June, males red, turning to yellow, grouped in clusters, females purplish red, about 0.5cm (1/5in) long. Cones may be up to 6cm (2½in) long, each scale with a small spine. They are produced in large numbers, up to 100 on a shoot, even on young trees. Needles are thick, pointed and slightly twisted. They are grouped in pairs. Z6.
