Pinus strobus L. Weymouth Pine or Eastern White Pine Native to eastern N. America. Planted for its light timber in central Europe and occasionally in the United States. Also planted in gardens and parks for ornament, but is susceptible in Britain to a fungal disease called blister-rust which has destroyed many old specimens. Height to 30m (100ft), or much more in the United States. Flowers open in early June, males yellowish green in a dense cluster, females pinkish green, about 1cm (2/5in) long. Cones are slender, about 12.5-15cm (5-6in) long, ripening from green to brown. Scales do not bear spines or prickles and open wide to release winged seeds. Needles are in bundles of 5 and are shorter than most other 5-needled pines, dark green on outsides and pale on inner surfaces. Young shoots may have tufts of short hair below the base of leaf bundles. Z3. |
