Pinus resinosa Ait. Red Pine
Native to south-eastern Canada, the Lake States and north-eastern United States on dry rocky or sandy soils and planted in northern parts of
N. America for timber and as an ornamental in parks and gardens. Found in Europe in botanical collections and large gardens. Height to 30m (100ft) in the wild. Flowers open in late May, males dark purple in clusters, females (near right) reddish purple about 1cm (2/5in) long. Cones are about 5cm (2in) long. Scales do not bear spines and open in autumn of their second year to release winged seeds (some needles have been cut off to show the cone more clearly). Needles are long and slender and grouped in pairs, densely packed on branches. They snap easily when bent in two. Shoots are orange and give off a strong lemon smell when broken. Bark of upper trunk in crown is orange red. Z3.
