Passiflora quadrangularis L. syn. P. macrocarpa Mast. (Passiflora) Granadilla or Giant Granadilla A huge woody climber with dark crimson flowers, native of Central America and the West Indies, but now found throughout the tropics, at up to 2S00m, flowering throughout the year, mainly in summer in cultivation. Stems to 15m or more, 4-angled and broadly winged. Leaves simple, unlobed, broadly ovate, 10-25cm long, 8-l5cm wide. Flowers pendent, l2cm across; sepals and petals pale red to deep brick red inside; outer corona filaments 6cm long, wavy, banded purple and white towards the base and mottled on the upper half. Fruit edible, the largest of any passion flower, to 30cm long, greenish-orange when ripe. (Fruit is rarely produced in greenhouse-grown plants.) Min. 10°C or lower for short periods, if kept dry. |
