Passiflora coriacea Juss. Bat-leaf Passion Flower (Plectostemma) A vigorous vine with exceptionally large variegated leaves, native of much of South America from N Peru, N Bolivia and Guyana to Mexico, at up to 2000m. The small flowers are freely produced throughout the year. Stems to 6m. Leaves medium green, mottled with pale yellowish-green; usually 2-3-lobed, to 7cm wide, 30cm long. Flowers to 3.5cm across, solitary or in pairs in the leaf axils and in terminal racemes to 6cm. Sepals yellowish-green, to l.5cm long; there are no petals. Corona filaments in 2 series, both yellow, outer rank to 8mm long, inner to 5mm long. Fruit globose, deep blue to 2cm across. Easy to grow and remarkably free from pests and diseases. Propagate from seed or cuttings. Min. 5°C for short periods.
