Pinus bungeana Zucc. Lacebark Pine Native to east and central China, cultivated in botanical collections and some gardens. Height may reach around 30m (100ft), the trunk usually divided into several stems low down, sometimes bushy. Flowers open in late May, males yellow and clustered at base of new growth, females yellowish green, about 1cm (2/5in) long, developing to round cones about 5-7.5cm (2-3in) long, each scale having a short spine. Seeds are hard, about 0.8cm (1/3in) long with a short wing. Needles are shiny and hard, grouped in 3s. The bark is perhaps the most noteworthy feature, being more like a plane than a pine. On old trees it becomes almost white but this is rarely seen in cultivation. Z5.
