Pittosporum tenuifolium Gaertn., syn Pittosporum 'Mayi'. Kohuhu, Tawhiwhi or Kohuhu (Pittosporaceae) An evergreen tree, native to New Zealand, grown in gardens and for its foliage which is commonly used by florists, especially in winter. Height to 9m (30ft). Flowers are about 1.8cm (¾in) across, open in May and have a strong sweet scent, most apparent in the evening. Fruits are about 1.2cm (½in) across and become dry and wrinkled as they ripen. Leaves are pale green, glossy and have a wavy edge. There are several cultivated varieties with leaves purple, golden or variegated. |
