Flowers are about 1.8cm (¾in) across, open in May and have a strong sweet scent, most apparent in the evening. Fruits are about 1.2cm (½in) across and become dry and wrinkled as they ripen. Leaves are pale green, glossy and have a wavy edge. There are several cultivated varieties with leaves purple, golden or variegated.
