Populus tremulu L Aspen, Quaking Aspen or European Aspen Native to Europe (including Britain), north Africa and Asia. Commonly forms thickets in the wild as it suckers easily. Height to about 15m (50ft). Flowers open in February, male catkins pinkish with grey silky hairs, about 5-10cm (2-5in) long, females also grey and silky. Fruiting catkins are about 10-12.5cm (5-6in) long and shed white woolly seeds in May. Leaves are almost round with wavy edges but on suckers may be wedge-shaped. They have stems flattened which causes them to quiver in the wind. They have pairs of glands where the blade meets the stem and turn clear yellow in autumn. Bark is smooth and greyish with horizontal lines. Zone 2 |
