Populus deltoides Marsh Eastern Cottonwood or Necklace Poplar
Native to eastern N. America. Planted in central Europe by roads and for timber, and in eastern states of America for shelter and ornament. Height to 30m (100ft) or more in the wild. Flowers open in March, males red, up to 5cm (2in) long, females greenish, up to 10cm (4in) long. Fruit capsules have 3 or 4 valves and release cottony seeds in June. Leaves have finely hairy edges and glands at join with leaf stem. Buds and leaves have a strong balsam fragrance. Zone 2
