Quercus rubra L., syn. Quercus borealis Michx. forma rubra Red Oak or Northern Red Oak Deciduous, native to the eastern half of N. America from central Florida and Texas to northern Canada. This is the best growing oak introduced from N. America to Europe; young trees may grow at the rate of 2.5m (8ft) per year. The wood, though hard, is not durable and has been used mainly for fire-wood and the bark, rich in tannin, is used in tanning leather. Height to 18-25m (60-80ft). Flowers appear in May, the red females can be seen in the axils of the new leaves. Acorns 1.8cm (¾in) long, take two years to mature and fall in October. Leaves are 10-22.5cm (4-9in) long are a lovely bright yellow for the first three weeks; the autumn colour is a deep red to brown. Z3. |
