Populus alba L. White Poplar, Silver-leaved Poplar or Abele Native to western and central Europe and central Asia. Cultivated in Europe and N. America for ornament in streets, parks and gardens, and found to be useful for shelter near the sea as it withstands salt spray. Height to 30m (100ft), but much less in Britain. Flowers open in April before leaves unfold, males reddish crimson and hairy about 7.5cm (3in) long; females greenish-yellow about 5cm (2in) long. Fruit catkins release white cottony seeds in June. Leaves are lobed and covered entirely by thick white down when first open, but becoming dark glossy green on upper surface and pure white underneath. Bark is smooth, white or grey with diamond-shaped marks and becomes black and rough at the base. Zone 3 |
