Prunus x yedoensis Matsum. Yoshino Cherry A deciduous tree, thought to be a hybrid between the Spring Cherry (P. subhirtella) and the Oshima Cherry (P. speciosa). Commonly planted in Japanese cities, in N. America, and sometimes in Europe. Height to 15m (50ft). Fragrant flowers open in late March or early April, about 2.5cm (1in), pale pink or white on red stems. Fruits are about l cm (2/5in) across and ripen black in August. They are bitter to the taste. Leaves are doubly toothed glossy on upper surface with hairy veins below. |
