Quercus imbricaria Michx. Shingle Oak. Deciduous, native to central and eastern United States where it is found on rich hillsides and fertile damp bottom land. Sometimes planted as an ornamental tree in N. America, but it is rare in collections in Europe. Pioneers used its timber for clapboards and shingles, a type of roof tile, hence the name Shingle Oak. A small tree to about 15m (50ft) in the wild, but may reach 2sm (80ft) in cultivation. Flowers appear in late May or early June, the females are in the leaf axils of the new growth. The acorns grow to 1.8cm (¾in) long and almost as wide; the specimens shown are not yet fully grown. The young leaves are a lovely yellow and remain so until mid June; a mature leaf is normally 10-17.5cm (4-7in) long and usually unlobed but occasionally three-lobed near the base. Z5.
