Prunus maackii Rupr. Manchurian Cherry or Amur Cherry
Deciduous tree, native to Manchuria, Korea and neighbouring parts of Russia, cultivated for ornament in gardens. Height to 12m (40ft). Fragrant flowers open in early May each about 1.2cm (½in) across in spikes 5-7.5cm (2-3in) long. Leaves have tiny dots on undersides and downy stems. Bark is shiny brown or golden, and peels in thin strips. Zone 2
