Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D. A. Webb, synonyms P. amygdalus Batsch,
P. communis(L.) Arcang., not Huds. Almond
Deciduous tree, probably native to south-west Asia and the Balkans, cultivated for its blossom and nuts, and naturalised in most of Europe.
Also cultivated in California, Australia and South Africa. Height to about 9m (30ft). Flowers open in March and April, up to 5cm (2in) across. Fruit is 3.7cm (1½-2½in) long with a green downy skin and little flesh which splits to release the oval pitted nut. Leaves are narrow, widest below the middle.
