Prunus campanulata Maxim. (Rosaceae) Taiwan Cherry, Formosan Cherry or Bell-Flowered Cherry A lovely slender upright tree with bright carmine-pink bell-shaped flowers in early spring before the leaves, native of Taiwan and S China, but widely cultivated in Japan, growing in hill forests below 600m. Tree to 10m; leaves ovate. Flowers in umbels, 2cm across. Fruit small, red. Suitable for areas too warm for most flowering cherries, and does well in the hills around Los Angeles. Needs warm summers with a winter minimum of -5°C. |
